Be honest... is this unnecessary?

I recently purchased a Levoit unit since I've been looking for an air purifier with washable filter, and I've been vacuuming the pre-filter and even lightly going over the disposable HEPA filter between replacements. I still change them on schedule, but I'm wondering... am I actually improving anything, or is this just placebo kind of cleaning? Be very frank to me, I'd much appreciate that.

I dont think running a vacuum over the hepa filter is wise coz they arent designed to be cleaned that way and you'll most likely damage the structure no matter how much cleaner it may look, just stick to changing them on schedule like you said

That's a great question. To be honest, vacuuming the pre-filter is totally fine, but giving the HEPA filter a once-over doesn't really do much and might even harm it. It's best to just stick to the replacement schedule you've been following. Kudos to you for staying on top of the maintenance

You're doing the right thing by vacuuming the washable pre-filter, that's its job and it helps the main filter last longer. The reason you don't vacuum a disposable HEPA filter is that it works like a super dense spiderweb, not a simple screen. You can't clean that web without breaking the delicate fibers. Once they're damaged, it can no longer catch the tiny microscopic particles it's designed to stop.
